Yeah, I never really decided either...there did definitely seem to be similarities between what happened to Tiffany and what happened to Mrs. Crawford; on the other hand, there were some significant differences too (Mrs. Crawford's corruption was purposeful, and she didn't undergo a second change when it was removed.)

I guess I wouldn't say it's set in stone unless it becomes relevant to the plot somehow, but it's certainly one reasonable interpretation.
