Hmm. I guess I wasn't meaning to imply that AIs can't "see" things online the way digital fairies do; we have portrayed them as showing up in constructed environments (i.e. the lounge, or the "white room" Bonzo kept Effie in,) so it's not unreasonable to say they could perceive the Internet in general that way.

However, it's a conscious choice for them; their natural perception is of pure, uninterpreted data flow, while the fairies' natural perception is a metaphorical representation of computer operations. (As an aside, that idea is inspired by Neal Stephenson's In the Beginning was the Command Line, if you want a long, rambling, but engaging dissertation on the topic ;D)

What they can't do is push the boundaries between a software entity and a physical being the way the fairies do, like observing the real world in a remote location (without a video camera to read) or entering a non-networked computer by "physical" contact. At least that's the way I think of it.

(As far as Cecilia's character, that's what I'd gathered from the last couple chapters, I'm just still trying to get a hang on how I would write it.)
